Skincare is a vital part of every Beauté Brownie's regimen so we jumped at the chance to support Cynthia Gitonga's Pop-Up Shop for her sea moss gel skincare line "PUSH". This intimate but fun and informative event was hosted at Flying Solo, a dope retail space for independent fashion designers located in Soho, NYC. We were greeted at the door with smiles, music, and champagne, so we were excited before we even hit Cynthia's Pop-Up. Let us just say, Cynthia is BREATHTAKING in person! And her skin? Glorious! We had never really explored the benefits of sea moss until then, but she sure made believers out of us that day!
Be sure to check out her website to learn more about her line and what it can do for you!

"The Little Mermaid" is literally our all-time favorite Disneymovie. We can sing the lyrics of all the songs without missing a single syllable, we've memorized all of the scene lines, but most of all, we cherish all of the joy it's brought to our childhoods. We can sing the lyrics of all the songs without missing a single syllable, we've memorized all of the scene lines, but most of all, we cherish all of the joy it's brought to our childhoods. For years to come, we decided that we were mermaids and no one could tell us otherwise. In more recent times, we've watched other classic Disney films be brought to life on the big screen, but the one we most hoped to see re-made into a live-action film, was that of "The Little Mermaid". Today, not only did we learn that what we had been waiting for was finally happening, we also learned that the Mermaid we've adored for so long will look like...US. The joy and giddiness this news brought to our hearts transformed us into kids again. Not only will "The Little Mermaid" bare brown skin in Disney's newest adaptation of the classic film, but she will be brought to life by one of our favorite singers and actresses, Halle Bailey of the sultry and smooth R&B duo, Chloe & Halle. Halle has such a beautiful and whimsical voice and is so vibrant with youth and cheer that we have no doubt she will soar in her portrayal of our little Ariel. We are so proud of her and we absolutely cannot wait to sit front row to feel all of the beauty and magic of this classic film move our hearts us once more through the eyes of a brown girl who is just as wondrous as the Mermaid we all dreamed to be.]]>

Sigh. The issue of colorism is a heavy topic that most shy from, for understandable reasons. Those who have never experienced it deny that it exists and those that have struggle to express the hurt to others in a healthy way. However, Peter Saji, writer for ABC's hit show "Black-Ish" did an excellent job at restarting this much needed conversation. The trailer alone touched on a few issues young women with darker skin tones experience on almost a daily basis, such as discouragement from wearing vibrant lipsticks or being told that she is "pretty for a dark skinned girl". Take a look at the clips below!
As if the clips weren't explosive enough the full episode was immensely powerful and a tear jerker as well. It honestly resurfaced some of the negativity we experienced as young women during our school years. What we appreciated most was that both sides of the issue were addressed equally. Those with darker skin tones usually experience the brunt of the inflicting pain, as the narrative is that light skin is beautiful and dark skin is not. However, negative colorist views towards those with a lighter skin tones were also addressed; the narrative that that they are not "black enough", are privileged and should be able to deal with seemingly harmless jokes made about such privilege. The weightiness of the family dynamic was also addressed. In many ways, almost all members of the Johnson family were both the victims and culprits of colorism, passively burdening others with their own insecurities.
Our thoughts? Colorism exists and it's ugly. We have personally experienced what it feels like to be targeted and bullied in school, all because we were darker. As we became adults, we noticed more subtle acts of discrimination that continued, and we were also able to identify instances in our lives where close family members and/or friends also passively passed on their own insecurities and negative views onto us.
Though we have our own views, we realized that healing can only happen when we all come together and talk about the elephant in the room, addressing both sides of the spectrum when it comes to the issue of colorism. So, we posted the clips on Instagram to spark up this conversation with our followers and asked a view key questions. Do you think colorism exists? Why or why not? Are people of a darker skin tone just hyper sensitive or is this a real issue? Most importantly, how can we address/fix this issue?
Chile, we were surprised we didn't break Instagram (a bit vain to say for little ol' us right?)! The responses POURED in. Check out a few views that stood out to us below! And, the conversation is FAR from over! Let us know your thoughts. Email us, join in the conversation by commenting on the post on our Instagram, comment here, or however else you see fit! Like Dre (played by Anthony Anderson) said at the end of the episode, "nothing gets better in the shadows". So, let's continue to talk about it!

We recently came across the new film presented by CoverGirl, advertising their new "TruBlend Matte Made" Liquid Foundation and we most definitely slow clapped after watching. THIS is what we mean by inclusion of ALL women in the world of makeup.
What we loved most, however, was the positive message behind the product. The ad seems to serve as a thank you letter to all of the women who spoke up about their unique needs during CoverGirls “I Am What I Make Up” campaign, which focused on the the power of makeup to express individuality. It begins with, “For everyone who told us what they needed in foundation.” Clearly, our voices roared during this campaign. In comparison to far too many other beauty brands, we were not overlooked in the imagery of this ad and in the range of shades represented in this new line of liquid foundation.

It's so disheartening as a mother to hear for the first time that your child is being or has been bullied in school, a place designed to help them grow, rather than to serve as a memory of pain.
We sympathized with that emotion when we came across footage of Gospel singer Erica Campbell's daughter, Krista Campbell, describing an experience in school where she was targeted for her dark skin during a recent episode of TV One’s reality show, "We’re The Campbells". Krista, the eldest daughter of Erica Campbell and producer Warryn Campbell opens up about her experience that she had never told her mother below:
The first thing we asked ourselves was, "this is still happening in 2018?". Despite the fact that the climate of society is changing to embrace one another's individuality and differences, people are still simple minded enough to bully another human being over the skin color they're born with and quite frankly, it's infuriating. It's infuriating because it's a sign of ignorance and because Krista, along with so many other young girls, who are so immensely beautiful and gifted with an extra portion of melanin, are being made to feel less than the queens that they are.
We want to hear from you, what do you think we need to be doing better to stop this ignorance? What can we do to better equip parents to deal with this kind of issue?]]>

Apparently, the below post has been going around social media for the past few days and I will admit, when I came across it, I stomped my foot! We usually like to keep things light and fun, but THIS, I just had to speak on!
As a woman who was bullied as a child (in my case, because of my dark skin-tone), I identified with this post so much! Being the victim of bullying and harassment (both verbally and physically) for most of my school years, usually by class mates much lighter in skin tone than I (not always though, that's another conversation), this post hit a soft spot. It became so problematic to the point where I even had to be transferred to another school once. Those years were the root of a lot of the self-esteem issues I had, and honestly, those issues still linger on a bit into my adulthood. I remember feeling so distraught and unattractive by the time I came home from school each day, it didn't really matter that my family assured me of otherwise; in my mind, something was wrong with me. Therefore, speaking from experience, I can say that having those experiences as a child do leave wounds that take a very long time to heal, and for some, they never really truly heal.
Parents and other family members really do need to be very careful with how they uplift their children when they are are being bullied for how they look. It's important to reassure them that they are beautiful, but not to make them that their beauty makes them BETTER, even when it may very well be the root of others jealously.
My mother used to tell me all the time that "she's just jealous of you because you're a pretty dark-skinned girl" (as if those two words being in the same sentence was such an anomaly, but that's another conversation). Of course I know that my mom meant well, and just wanted me to see and appreciate my beauty. However, if I had taken her words and applied them to every single altercation I had with someone with a lighter skin tone than mine, years later you'd have a grown woman truly believing that her skin tone makes her superior and that anyone who looks different from her is simply envious.
Sadly, as Kyla mentioned, this very thinking is one of the many roots of colorism (and some's denial of it).
However, the lingering pain from childhood experiences cannot be accepted as a valid excuse for ignorant behavior. As adults, when we find traces of prejudice in ourselves, we definitely do need to acknowledge why those prejudices are there, because acknowledging the experiences that caused them is the first step towards healing and change. However, we cannot stop there. Most importantly, we need to make sure that we don't allow those experiences to become excuses for ignorant and hurtful thinking and bad behavior towards others. At a certain age, we have to take accountability for our actions instead of justifying them with bad childhood experiences. We all have one or more negative experiences from our childhood that has helped shape who we are as adults today. However, growth is a necessary and constant process and there's nothing wrong with checking ourselves when needed. If we can all do the work to acknowledge our scars, heal from them and grow, we make for better parents and in turn, a better future for our children!]]>

We have been so obsessed with Donald "Childish's Gambino" Glover's music video for his new single "This Is America" that he released this past Tuesday! Not only is this single an amazing track, but the hidden messages weaved into many of the scenes that focused on the current state of our country and the indifference of most towards crime, injustice and corruption really resonated with us. Not to mention, he absolutely killed those dance moves.
Speaking of dance moves, we have Sherrie Silver to thank for that killer choreography.
Sherrie, a Rwandan native and favored choreographer, has always had a passion for dance. Her work was passed into the hands of Donald Glover's team and it was decided that she would be the perfect person to help bring light to the music video's political themes through dance.
Silver says her goal is to "take Afro dance and Afro culture to the world and then take the world to Africa," and this video gave her the platform to do that. Plus, the concept fit perfectly with her own background. "Dance is everything to us," she explains. "No matter how much is going on—even if it's the middle of a war or poverty or hunger—one thing Africans share is we dance our sorrows away. Not even professionally, it's just a part of our culture.
Learn more about Sherrie and her experience with creating choreography for this project via her interview with Eric Skelton of Pigeons & Planes here!

Our people are really speaking out, creating businesses and forcing the masses to see that brown people will spend a buck. Not really sure why they didn’t think we spend money but just in case someone reads this article, listen... WE DO AND WE WILL.
Many cosmetic black owned companies have tried to provide women of color with a large palette of hues but was never able to get the national coverage that we would have liked. We want to give Kudos to Rihanna (Fenty Beauty) for using her celebrity to bring awareness to the fact that women of color BUY MAKEUP! There are and were other brands that offered this diversity but were overlooked and now many are realizing we were here!
Lets support our black owned brands and not just LIKE a photo but buy their products! Our goal this year is to support other brands!
HOW DO WE EXPECT TO TO GROW OUR OPTIONS IF WE DON’T SUPPORT OTHERS?!

Danielle Brooks recently mentioned something that we've been noticing ourselves lately. Is it just us, or does it seem like the fashion industry has made Ashley Graham the poster child for curvy women?
Though Danielle is extremely successful, such as being a key star in the critically acclaimed Netflix series "Orange is the New Black", one of the faces of Lane Bryant and designer Christian Siriano's muse, she explains that she is still ignored by the rest of the fashion industry.
In an interview with Vogue, she says:
"I haven’t been given an opportunity to wear these big-name designers. It has never been an option whether I had a stylist or didn’t. A lot of people won’t design for me, no matter how many SAG awards, Tony nominations, Grammy wins; it doesn’t matter. I don’t know if fashion has made a wholehearted effort. It’s more like, ‘Oh this is a trend, let’s get on it.’ Then they bring in Ashley Graham, who is amazing, but isn’t the only plus-size model ever to exist. What about Marquita [Pring], Denise [Bidot], Philomena [Kwao], Tess Holliday? When I look at the ads I don’t see faces like mine, I see skinny white women.”
We could not agree more. There is still a deficit of imagery of curvy women in the fashion industry. In 2017, this should not still be an issue, as half of us aren't your typical super skinny super-model type. Nothing is wrong with that if you are but what is wrong, is that your average every day woman is not being included as much as we should be. Additionally, designers and magazines seem to be clamoring for the chance to collaborate with Ashley Graham with no consistency when it comes to inclusion outside of a project with her. Like Danielle said, Ashley is amazing, but why does the buck stop there?
Another thing we noticed, when these brands do collaborate with curvy models, they don't go past the shade of honey. I personally believe that a woman being curvy and brown-skinned is a bit to rich for the taste of most in the fashion industry. It's almost as if they can only tolerate one or the other and it's really disappointing. Therefore, we have two issues here. Not only is there still a lack of representation of curvy women in the fashion industry, but where that is happening, they're hardly Beauté Brownies. A lack of diversity all around.
What do you think? Have you noticed it as well? What can we all do to address and fix this issue? We'd like to hear your perspective!

I for one am ecstatic about the new competition between cosmetic brands to create shades of foundation that include women of darker skin tones. We call them "Dark Girl Friendly".

I for one am ecstatic about the new competition between cosmetic brands to create shades of foundation that include women of darker skin tones. We call them "Dark Girl Friendly".
One brand that most recently expanded it's line to include these shades was Kylie Cosmetics. Last night on Snapchat, Kylie Jenner gave us a look at her 30 new concealers, which she'll be calling "Skin Concealers" due to their creamy consistency and medium coverage. I was so happy to see so many dark shades for us Beauté Brownies!
Unfortunately, my excitement turned into confusion, as I saw so many negative comments about her announcement in The Shade Room's Instagram post about the news. Many commented things like "Fenty already won bye", "You’re not Rihanna stop it!!", "Sis tryna get on that #blackgirlmagic payroll.. ahaaa ya got to be quicker than that".
WHAT?!
We all complained that cosmetic brands have not been inclusive of our skin tones for so many years. Now that companies are actually honoring our wishes, they are bashed for doing so, which I feel is very unfair. I for one am not interested in relying on only one source for all of my cosmetic needs. You should see my makeup bag. I don't think there's ONE brand of makeup that even repeats twice in there. That being said, I really don't understand why these companies are being accused of "copying" other brands like Fenty Beauty. In fact, they are making the smartest business move in this day and age. They're finally recognizing an audience they've been overlooking, and they want to get in on it. Isn't that what business is all about? Evolving? Learning? That brings me to my second point...
Rihanna's "Fenty Beauty" line was not the first to release an inclusive line. Companies like Becca Cosmetics, Make Up Forever, Vera Moore and others have been offering us foundations for our many shades for quite some time now. The only difference is that Rihanna's celebrity status shed light on a thirsty niche of consumers that, of course we knew, were long overdue in being offered inclusive makeup. However, let's not credit this shift in the beauty business to just one person. WE DID THIS. We spoke up, so Rihanna and others will continue to promote diversity in their cosmetic lines.
I definitely get the notion that we are viewed as an after thought for a lot of these brands these days, that we should have been thought of in the first place, that they should have been inclusive from the very beginning. After all, humans NEVER just came in just one shade. The darker of us have been left out for too long.
But times are changing! Let's embrace it! Let's WELCOME the healthy competition between makeup brands. I'm personally flattered that these brands are fighting to find their way into my home and makeup regimen. Isn't it beautiful that we're finally getting what we want? Let's not forget that the end goal is that ALL companies offer inclusive lines, to promote DIVERSITY. Does it really matter who did it first? They ALL need to do it. And guess what? We're getting exactly that. FINALLY.

Oh, Aja Naomi King. How do we love you!
Seriously, this rising star has become one of our favorite people. Today, we heard the exciting news that she is joining the L’Oreal Paris family as their newest spokeswoman!
King’s newest role is a natural fit! The actress’ love of beauty was sparked at a young age by her mother — specifically watching her put on makeup in the morning as a daily ritual (her mother even had L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Lipcolour as one of her go-tos!). “Makeup became my armor growing up,” said King in a statement via the brand. She continued, “It provided me with a sense of protection and gave me the power and confidence to face the world in the way I wanted. To now represent L’Oréal Paris is incredibly overwhelming. I am so excited to help others find and believe in the beauty of who they are because everyone deserves to know their own worth.” Here’s what is to come from King and L’Oreal: her first campaign will be for True Match Lumi Glow, a brand new collection of five products that are designed to create an effortless and luminous glow. What’s in the new line of glow-inducers? Glotion Natural Glow Enhancers, Glow Nude Palette, Shimmerista Powder, Glow Boosting Drops and Bronze it Bronzer. In other words, everything you need to perk up a dull face this winter.
Congrats girl!]]>

"Girls Trip" was an absolutely hilarious (and at moments a tear jerking) flick and Tiffany was the star that shined the brightest. In fact, some would say she was the "break-out star" but she's been on the scene for quite a while, which we didn't know initially! A little background for you from Wikipedia:
After guest starring on several television series, Haddish gained prominence as Jackie on the first season of the OWN television drama If Loving You Is Wrong from 2014 to 2015. From 2015 to 2017, she starred as Nekeisha Williams on the NBC sitcom The Carmichael Show. After appearing in the 2016 comedy film Keanu, Haddish made her film breakthrough as Dina in the 2017 film Girls Trip, for which she received critical acclaim. Come to find out, Tiffany's story alone is inspirational. She openly spoke about being homeless in LA and even about her troubled childhood in her Showtime special "SHE READY! From the Hood to Hollywood!" that aired on August 18, 2017.
Now, we are congratulating Tiffany for making history by becoming the first black female stand-up comic to host Saturday Night Live in its 43 seasons. Amazing! We are so happy for this bubbly and fabulous around the way girl. We see big things coming her way in the very near future!

I mean, at what point and in what year will the hate and intolerance of diversity stop? I'm typing as fast as a pissed off wife texting her man about forgetting their wedding anniversary! Here at Beauté Brownie, we make it our aim that 90% of our articles are uplifting and inspiring, and not to give any extra spotlight to the sad and ignorant realities of today's world. However, there are some stories that we have to address.
Nyakim Gatwetch is an absolutely gorgeous Sudanese model that was asked a disturbing question by her Uber driver as she hopped in for a ride. Check out her experience below:
There is no way I would have been able to continue that Uber ride after a question like that, and the read of a review this man would have received would have been EPIC. Uber would have been paying for my rides for the next year by time I was done!
You know, I applaud Nyakim for taking such a negative experience and instead of allowing it to discourage her, she used it as rocket fuel to continue to succeed in her career and achieve her dreams. Kudos to you, love!
I just really don't understand why there are people out there that think that it is okay to blatantly project their colorist views on others and not think of the consequences and the effect what they say can have on others. This is just one sad story that we know about, but imagine how many women with darker skin tones have to hear comments like these everyday. How many young girls are being bullied right now for the skin that they were born with.
At this point, there is nothing that we can do to stop adults who have already adopted this intolerant way of thinking. However, as adults who do know better, we can strive to raise our children in way that encourages them to love and respect people of all skin tones, nationalities and cultures. If we really come together and make an effort to take control and positively mold future generations, hearing stories of this nature will fade overtime.
I ask you all, what are the first steps that we can take now to stop colorism?

Good Morning Beauté Brownies,
As dark skinned woman myself, it's always been a struggle to find the right foundation, much less, a contour kit that is truly dark enough to actually work with my skin tone. Honestly, I've really just given up and stayed away from the whole contour craze. I admire it on everyone else though for sure!

As dark skinned woman myself, it's always been a struggle to find the right foundation, much less, a contour kit that is truly dark enough to actually work with my skin tone. Honestly, I've really just given up and stayed away from the whole contour craze. I admire it on everyone else though for sure!
Yesterday during Jarette's usual Youtuber stalking session, she came across Nyma Tang's review of Kim Kardashian's "KKW Creme Beauty Contour Kit" in Deep Dark, and sent it to me. All I want to say is... Deep Dark where? Take a look at the video below and you'll see what I mean:
Do you see how the color meant to contour literally just blended into her skin? The highlight was also way to light. It makes no sense to call a contour kit "deep dark" that isn't even true to it's name. I am a fan of Kim's, and I've always admired her work ethic and fashion sense, but this is totally unacceptable. The blatant choice of cosmetic lines to leave out women with darker skin tones is really disheartening. As Nyma mentioned, it could make you feel that there is something wrong with your skin. It took years for me to feel confident with my skin, so I know first hand how it feels to be left out, ashamed and discouraged when shopping for beauty products. Huge cosmetic companies like KKW Beauty and others really need to do better to cater to ALL skin tones, not just those that are lighter. There is absolutely no excuse for the lack thereof, being that these companies have the vast resources to be inclusive. What are your thoughts?]]>

Today we came across an article on The Renewal Project about 19-year-old college student Sasha Ariel Alston who has written a beautiful inspirational children's book.
The tech industry has a gender diversity problem. A 19-year-old from Washington D.C. is pushing back with a new book. Sasha Ariel Alston began writing “Sasha Savvy Loves to Code,” a semi-autobiographical story about a 10 year-old African American girl and her friends attending an all-girls coding camp. Her goal was to inspire young girls to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math, while teaching some programming basics as well.
The tech industry can be isolating, Alston said, “Even with me in [tech], I still don’t feel necessarily comfortable, because I don’t really think I have anybody that I can truly relate to.” In this sense, Alston and her book are models for the next generation of girls, showing that they can be interested in tech without stigma, that they too can love to code.

Now this is what we like to see! A young woman taking a negative life experience and turning it into a positive movement.
10 year old Kheris Rogers was bullied for her dark complexion, so she started a fashion brand to inspire others to love the skin they're in. It broke our hearts when she re-told the story of how her and her classmates were assigned to draw themselves and her teacher handed her black crayon instead of a brown one. She then switched to a more diverse school but the bullying didn't stop because she was then bullied by her other classmates. The sadness she felt from being bullied by classmates of her own race inspired her to create a fashion line that helped other girls & boys love and appreciate their skin tone and diversity. Watch the flick below to learn more about Kheris, her journey and her goals!
